The new technology will increase the speed of the memory

IBM and Micron Technology have announced the launch of new modules Hybrid Memory Cube (HMC), built on a stack of memory chips positioned close to each other.

HMC technology was introduced in September this year at the Intel Developer as a joint development between the two companies.

The modules

HMC uses a technology called "connection through the silicon," which provides electrical connection between the crystals collected in the stack of DRAM and a crystal with a scheme of high-speed input-output. Through this arrangement will get more channels and achieve better performance compared to traditional semiconductor system.

In the prototype

HMC speed of the memory is increased 15-fold, and reduced energy consumption by 70%. In this HMC only 10% of the PCB, chip DRAM usually takes the same amount.

Commercial production of chips

HMC Company will Micron, IBM will provide the production technology, as well as the development and supply controller ICs.

first deliveries of the new chips will begin in the second half of 2012, after the "break" them and start to put in personal computers.

In October, Micron and Samsung have formed a consortium Hybrid Memory Cube Consortium (HMCC), whose task is to develop and promote open specifications HMC.
